Customisation is the tailoring of a training product (a training package or an accredited course) to meet the specific needs of your business or industry, it is not merely an off the shelf product delivered to a group of your people.

Customisation must ensure the integrity of:

• Existing endorsed National competency standards, or organisational standards forming the basis of the training package or accredited course
• Industry skill and portability requirements
• Accreditation of customised programme from the appropriate Award Body (applicable to training programmes that are going to be internationally recognised and externally awarded)

It is also important to consider other industry sectors and enterprises, and your industry as a whole, when contextualising units of competency at the time of delivery. Care must be taken to:

• Include content relevant to your industry as a whole (e.g. industry terminology, work practices)
• Define a context through which the outcomes of a unit of competency will be achieved
• Use enterprise-specific equipment, facilities and learning resources
• Tailor assessment instruments to suit the needs of your industry sector and training attendees (e.g. workplace project, reasonable modification for an individual with a disability) Include enterprise-specific contexts in the range of variables
• Add relevant, enterprise-specific underpinning knowledge
